No Time

To anyone that might be taking an occasional glance at this page, looking for an update, this will be the last one for the foreseeable future. Literally the week after my second post, a lot of significant things started happening in my personal life. Because of this I don’t have the time to maintain a blog and won’t be updating this one anytime soon. I’ll keep it up in case that time does come sooner rather than later but for now, this is it. Please do keep up to date with what’s going on in the Hack Tyler world, www.hacktyler.com and www.maketylerweird.com.

Various Rumblings in Central Tyler

Hello readers!  There isn’t anything too exciting going on right now but I really wanted to get a post in this week.

I’ll start with downtown’s newest eatery, Taqueria El Lugar #4.  I know what you’re thinking, “yay more Mexican food…” and I would agree with that sentiment, we do need more variety downtown.  However, any new business DT is warmly welcomed, that it is locally owned is icing on the cake.  They are in the former Feed Lot (oh how I miss those burgers!) space and are open Monday - Saturday, 10AM - 9PM.

Next I want to take a look at Tyler’s first public-use Compressed Natural Gas/Liquified Petroleum Gas station that is going in at the corner of N Bois D’ Arc and Oakwood ( http://g.co/maps/sn43p ).  A fairly interesting shop/gas-station stood on this site formerly so I’m a bit saddened that we lost that structure, however I’d say that this is a step up for the city.  You will not be able to fuel up your barn-built CNG vehicle here, sorry.  It has to be a “certified”, per First Alt. Fuels Inc.  Construction should be complete towards the end of the summer.

Lastly, Stanley’s is going to be starting major renovations/expansion soon.  I don’t have many details at this time but Nick Pencis, owner of Stanley’s, has told me that there will be a food park.  I’m envisioning something very Austin-y.  Whatever it is, I have faith that it will be awesome.  Also, at least one, hopefully more, of the exterior walls are going to be muralized by a local artist.

My next post will hopefully be about the redevelopment of the former Carlton Hotel that currently houses the sherrif’s office ( http://g.co/maps/vgvrg ).  The plan is to convert the tower into condos with ground floor restaurant space.  Very exciting stuff so stay tuned!

The Lindsey Building/Fair Foundation Building

Hello everyone and welcome to the new blog!  My plate is pretty full right now so my updates may not be on a reliable schedule but I will try to do at least a couple per month.

For my first post I am going to take a look at the Lindsey Building and Fair Foundation Building at the corner of Broadway and Elm.  http://g.co/maps/p54r2  At some point in this block’s history the Lindsey Building housed a ‘Hurwitz’ and the Fair Building was the local Sears.

Today they are mostly unused; the bottom floor of the Fair Building is occupied by ‘Tyler Square Antiques’ and the Lindsey Building appears to be being used for file storage.

Two things have piqued my interest about this block in the past few months.  First off, per the Tyler Paper, a possible feature of a planned parking garage accross the street would be a connection to the third floor of the Lindsey Building (source: http://tinyurl.com/7l8jg3g ).  Second, about one month ago a demolition crew tore down an attached garage that fronted Elm St. http://g.co/maps/e2vc4.

Two weeks ago I spoke to Beverly Abell of Heart of Tyler and she confirmed that there is something in the pipeline for these buildings.  She of course couldn’t give any details as there is a private developer involved but it’s still exciting to hear that something is in the works.

That is all I have for now, as I get more information I will update this post.
